You should schedule an appointment about a month before you are looking at retiring. We encourage both you and your spouse/registered domestic partner to attend your counseling appointment so each receives this valuable retirement information. If you have any questions, a Retirement Counselor will be able to answer your questions during your appointment.
Appointments are always preferred. This gives Retirement staff an opportunity to properly prepare for your meeting and better able to provide the best and most accurate information. Retirement is a very serious matter.
When you schedule your appointment, Retirement staff will advise of the documents to bring. The most common documents are your driver’s license, social security number verification, marriage/registered domestic partner certificate, outstanding divorce documents and a voided check.
At your retirement appointment, you will be given the opportunity to elect to stay on the City’s insurance plan. You will be responsible for 100% of the premium as a retiree. Should you elect to discontinue the City’s insurance, you will not be able to return to the plan regardless of how your situation may change. This is an extremely important decision so do your homework! Call the Personnel Services Division at 621-6992 to discuss insurance.
You will be required to pay income tax on the taxable amount of your retirement benefit. The Retirement office will withhold based on your direction. You should consult a competent tax professional for advice.
In most cases, you will receive your first retirement benefit on the final business day of the month in which you are retiring. Retirement benefits are paid by direct deposit, on the final business day of every month.
